Whanganui

Now we travel from the mountains to the sea - over tussock, through bush and down a grand river, exposed to nature and, potentially, all its elements.  There are two National Parks to savour – the Tongariro and the Whanganui. Both are dramatic and spiritual places.
As indicated by the controversy over the spelling of the city and the district, Whanganui/Wanganui has a rich Maori and European history which is to be enjoyed throughout this district.
The Te Araroa route passes through some very remote areas with few re-supply points. Tourist operators can be very helpful however walkers need to think ahead, plan well and pre-organise their food and accommodation requirements.
