Description
(North to South) |
From Opua, take the vehicular ferry over the Veronica Channel to Tapu Point. From there, follow Aucks Road 400m & turn left into Pipiroa Rd & down to the “Okiato to Russell Walkway”:
Follow it up and down through wetland, bush, over private property & around cliffs from Pipiroa Bay to Aucks Rd (35 mins) to Te Wahapu Rd (35mins) to Hirst Reserve, Orongo Bay (35 mins) and on to the last bit of Auckland Rd before the junction with Russell Whakapara Rd.
Turn SE and follow this sealed road for 9km past the Waikara Rd turnoff. 600m further on, just where the sealed road turns into Kempthorne Rd, continue on the now unsealed and windy Russell Whakapara Rd through beautiful bush in the Ngaiotonga Scenic Reserve. After another 7.5kms, you will see the DoC signs depicting the Ngaiotonga Route (the start of the Russell Walkway) on the SW side of the road. |
