Southern End Beach access at end of Pakiri River Road, Pakiri Beach
Distance 17 kms
Time 4-5 hours
Tramping Standard Easy tramping track
Description
(North to South)

Being a coastal route, it’s best to time it for low tide:

From Black Swamp Rd, make a left into Pacific Rd (an earlier beach access is still being negotiated) which leads you through a forestry block to the beach.
Just one kilometre south of this entry, a stream cuts across the beach and it can go over thigh height, as can other water crossings on this track.  Follow the coast southwards for another 2 kms, then take the track over Te Arai Point. Once back on the beach, continue southwards for 12 km (fording Poutawa Stream on the way) until you cross the Pakiri River then head inland to reach the end of Pakiri River Road.

Note 1: when heavy rain & high tide coincide, these rivers can be deep.
Note 2: Te Arai Point and the forestry block immediately below it are owned by government agencies. Off-beach tracks are available in the forest.
