Bulls Bridge to Ngaio/Wilsons Rd Intersection - approx 7 km
Leaving Bulls township, follow the footpath on the southwest side of SH1,3 and cross Bulls Bridge over the Rangitikei River. At the junction with Tangimoana Rd, cross the Highway into Wightmans Rd. From here the route is well-marked with Te Araroa logos.
Looking south, Wightmans Rd gives excellent views of the Tararua Ranges from Palmerston North south and the wind turbines can be seen located north and south of the Manawatu Gorge. On the left are excellent views of the meandering Rangitikei River. Passing some of the Ohakea Defence Base outbuildings, continue along Wightmans Rd until reaching the intersection with Hurst Rd.
Thirty metres past Hurst Rd on the left is a stile alongside a double gate. Crossing the stile, the route passes through private land. Follow the track leading down the terrace towards the river to where a second stile is crossed. Please note: By agreement with the owner, NO dogs, firearms nor vehicles are permitted. Public access through private farmland is not permitted June to October. Alternative access for this period is via Hurst Road and Wilson Road.
The trail is marked and heads northeast following the Rangitikei River for approx 2 km. The marked route then ascends to the top of the river terrace and follows the fence line east with excellent views upstream on the Rangitikei River. Again this is private land: NO dogs, firearms or vehicles permitted and no access from June to October.
After approx 1km, the trail crosses the fence and turns south, following the lower edge of a pine plantation to end where a short farm lane leads onto Ngaio Road Extension. Follow this road for 700m until reaching the Wilsons Rd/Ngaio Rd intersection where the Ohakea Radar Station is located.
Ngaio/Wilsons Rd Intersection to Mt Biggs School - approx 5 km Cross Wilsons Rd heading East along Ngaio Rd to Mt Lees Reserve. Originally part of Ngaio Station which encompassed the area between Feilding and the Rangitkei River, Mt Lees is now a scenic reserve but also provides accommodation, morning and afternoon teas and catering for functions. The bushwalks around this reserve are a good side trip with some impressive specimen trees. Further information is available at www.mtlees.co.nz.
Going east, Ngaio Rd leads onto the Mt Stewart Halcombe Rd. From this intersection to Sandon Rd by Mt Biggs School ( approximately 1 km), there are views of the Ruahine Ranges.
Mt Biggs School to Kowhai Park - approx 7 km
Continue east along Sandon Rd for 1.5 km, passing Te Rakehou Rd, veering south east until reaching the Lees Rd intersection.
The trail follows Sandon Rd a further 3.5km before turning into Ranfurly Rd which leads into the suburban area of Feilding. (On Ranfurly Road there are great views of both the Ruahine and Tararua Ranges, windfarms on the ranges, and Kapiti Island on a clear day). At West St, turn right for 300m then left into South St. Continue 200m to reach Kowhai Park. Outside the Kowhai Park entrance, you can see the Feilding town centre with its prominent clock tower 600m away.
Extra Info
Optional Walk: - An interesting walk and alternative to the main trail is from the Lees Road/Sandon Road intersection. Follow Lees Road to the Awahuri Road intersection, turn right for about 1 kilometre and then turn left into Kawakawa Road. Enter Kitchener Park and follow the boardwalk and walkway beside the Makino Stream and alongside Manfield, crossing Rimu Street to the Kowhai Park exit to meet the trail on South Street. This alternative is not marked with Te Araroa signage.
