Maps & Track Notes

Welcome to the maps and track notes for Te Araroa Trail

You can browse the maps and read details of each section of the track. Some parts are suitable for a single day walk, others a weekend expedition. Through walkers can also use them for detailed information on the route.

Track Notes

The sections are divided into North and South Island and then into regions. You may drill down to a specific walk which contains track notes and the printable PDF strip maps covering the walk. We are replacing the GPX files with a set of points that can be loaded as 'points of interest' that are clearer than a track line and can be turned on as required.

If you have recently walked a section and think that additional notes are required, please sign up to leave comments for us and other trampers.

Printable Map Sets

A full set of 131 strip maps in a single PDF file can be  downloaded. Do not attempt to view such large files in your browser. Right-click and save to your local disk and then open with Adobe Acrobat.

Whole of NZ (deleted, too large)

North Island v 29 stripmap_North (219 MB)

South Island v 29 stripmap_South (126 MB)

Stripmap Index stripmap_indexNZ.pdf (800KB)

These are designed for A3 at 1:50,000 but can be printed at A4 using Adobe Reader scaling options to be used as a suitable map for basic route finding in conjuction with the track notes. The background uses the latest NZ Topo information. If you do not want to download the single large file, separate map pages are available for download on each walk's track notes. In remote areas you will still need to supplement these with the Topo50 A1 maps.

Note that the individual maps are layered PDF files where you can selectively turn off layers such as the trail to see underlying features. The legend has a bug that draws the open sections in black instead of red, fixed in the next release.
