Description
(North to South)

From the end of Mangakahu Rd, walk down for the road for 6km to an intersection. Take the left/SW fork into Ngakonui-Ongarue Rd and follow it for 12 km to the next intersection. Turn right for 1.5km, then  left for 500m to reach the small settlement of Ngakonui.

Keep walking straight ahead on the Taumarunui-Ngapuke Rd for 27km to another small settlement of Taringamotu. 1.5km further on, turn right at the intersection, and shortly after, turn left onto Golf Rd. Follow it for 3 km all the way into the main road of Taumarunui (Peka no 2/Main South Highway 4).

From Taumarunui township, follow SH4 in an easterly direction for 7 km. Near Manunui, turn left into SH4. Follow SH4 for 5km to Pukehou Rd on the right/south.

Taumarunui is a useful place for restocking and accomodation.

Note: Note that a river crossing across the Whanganui river is required at the end of Pukehou Road in Kakahi. At low flows it is fordable but if there has been rain you should turn off at State Highway 4 and left up the Waitea Branch Road to Kakahi or proceed directly to Owhango 13 kms down State Highway 4 to the start of the 42nd Traverse Track.
