Traverse 42 (Te Araroa Route) OPEN
Northern Start Owhango
Southern End Te Porere Redoubt
Distance 34 km
Tramping Standard Tramping track
Description
(North to South)

The planned track follows part of the 42nd Traverse four wheel drive road for the first 22 km and then will branch off along the Waione/Cokers DOC track, then on to Access Road No 3 which leads to State Highway 47. A further 4 km north there is the junction with State Highway 46 where there is accommodation.

At present the Waione/Cokers Track is not marked, so you may choose to walk down the entire 42nd Traverse exiting on to State Highway 47 six kilometres further south.

The strip maps for this section are not properly centred yet due to changes to the planned route.

Extra Info

From Owhango I hiked East to the 42 Traverse.  The 42 Traverse is a well known bicycle/motorbike/four wheeler track.  Ask anybody in  Owhango and they can tell you where to find the track.

It's a LONG track.  It's 44 kilometers from Owhango to the  Southeastern end, Kapoors Road.  The going isn't terribly steep on foot (despite the horrific-looking elevation maps at either terminus).  It is, however, rocky, muddy, full of loose gravel and uneven bits.  There are few places to camp/hammock.  There's a little fear (for me) of a quad coming around a corner at top speed.  I only met two guys the entire time I was on the track.   The scenery is GORGEOUS!

Even in the rain I was amazed at some of the views.  There are lots of side trails which might be confusing... but isn't.  It's obvious which is the main track.I never once got turned around or headed down a side path. There were three river crossings.  All three crossings were at the final third of the 42 Traverse.  The first was the only slightly scary one.  At the time  (rain, remember) it was knee-deep and fast moving.  the other two were a walk in the park.

At the end of the 42 Traverse I hit Kapoors Road, which is nothing more than a gravel road (felt just like the rest of the 42, really) leading out to the desolate SH47.  It was another 10 or 11 kilometers North on SH47 'til I reached SH46.  There is NOTHING along the stretch of SH47.  (from Tengu, Dec 2010)
