The YHA Hostels supporting Te Araroa are:
Five minutes from 90 mile beach, YHA Ahipara is the first stop on Te Araroa trail when travelling North to South. YHA Ahipara offers Te Araroa walkers great facilities and a range of accommodation including backpackers’ lodge, tent sites, cabins and a self-contained lodge. Dry out and store your gear while you fuel up in the guest kitchen, make use of the full laundry, check emails and trade travel stories beside the open fireplace over board games and ping pong.
Send your bounce box ahead to have it upon arrival or arrange to pick up extra supplies if you call or email at least 48 hours ahead of arrival. When you’re ready to hit the trail again, staff can drop you off at Herekino Saddle for a small donation towards fuel. YHA Low Carbon Travellers are welcome.
YHA Bay of Islands (Paihia)
YHA Bay of Islands Paihia is ideal for Te Araroa walkers with a range of accommodation options from shared to private rooms, all ensuited. The hostel is only 100m from the beach and a 5 minute walk to the Bay of Islands’ many water activities. Make the most of the hostel’s full kitchen facilities to cook up a feed or ask staff for their favourite restaurants nearby. Give your tramping clothes a thorough wash in the laundry facilities and then relax and unwind in the cosy lounge and outdoor area. Send your labelled bounce box ahead to collect upon arrival. YHA Whangarei is perfectly situated for Te Araroa walkers and welcomes walkers to send their gear ahead to pick up. The hostel offers various room options including dorm and private cabins, with or without kitchenettes. Hang your gear to air out or dry out and then refresh and soak away the aches of the trail in the hostel’s hot tub or swimming pool.
When getting ready to hit the trail again, restock your supplies in Whangarei City, a 1.5km walk or a short bus ride away. Whangarei offers a range of outdoor supply shops, supermarkets, cafes, restaurants and bars.
Once you’re restocked, let YHA staff know where you’d like to start on the trail and they’ll organise shuttle transport. If you plan to stay a bit longer in Whangarei, chat to staff about long or short term storage.

YHA Auckland City and YHA Auckland International offer a great place to rest up in the first big city stop along the Te Araroa journey. Make use of fully-equipped kitchens, relaxed dining rooms, TV rooms, sundecks, BBQ area and laundry. These YHAs can hold your mail for up to three months if you have a booking, offer long term storage for just $10 per week and are staffed 24 hours. Stock up on groceries at the nearby supermarket or grab a packed breakfast at the hostel. The friendly staff will book your bus back into the wild.Free Wifi is available to YHA Members. YHA Hamilton is centrally located in the vibrant city centre which means everything is at your doorstep! There is a supermarket across the road, the hostel is on the bus route and it is an easy walk to a huge choice of restaurants and bars. YHA Hamilton offers a range of private and multi-share rooms all with ensuite as well as motel-style self-contained units with air conditioning. Sky TV and free to air channels are available in nearly all rooms as well as the common room.
YHA Waitomohas been entertaining guests for decades with its deep caverns, luminescent glowworms and dark waterways for generations. YHA Waitomo offers the perfect base to experience all this spectacular place has to offer. The hostel is situated on a farm and has stunning views and native forest as your backdrop. Relax in a hammock by our large swimming pool and unwind from the adrenalin activities on your doorstep.
YHA National Park

Right on the trail and under the shadow of three volcanoes, YHA National Park is well equipped for walkers conquering Te Araroa. The hostel provides a drying room and plenty of storage for gear. There's a wood fire in the kitchen and an outdoor shop 700m away.
Wind down in the comfortable communal area with board games, movies or swap your book. Fuel up at one of the recommended local eateries before heading out again. Hostel transport to/from the Tongariro Alpine Crossing and Mt Ruapehu Whakapapa Ski Field is offered for a fee. Call ahead to let staff know your plans and they will hold incoming mail for you.
Or, give your feet a rest. YHA Ohakune rents and relocates bikes for the 30km portion of Te Araroa from Ohakune to Pipiriki and the 70km Whanganui River Road to Whangaui. Trailer and panniers are available for hire or the hostel will transport gear.

Set amongst spacious sub-tropical gardens, YHA Whanganui is adjacent to the Whanganui River and is a restful and quiet hostel that feels more like a B&B. Choose either a private or multi-share room and take advantage of the huge kitchen for cooking up a feed to refuel. Relax in the comfortable lounge with TV, music centre, games, cards and a small library. The hostel offers in-house massage and Reiki healing treatments by appointment – great for those aches and pains of Te Araroa!
No need to wander far off the track, just pop across the road to YHA Paraparaumu and you’ll feel like you’re home. Overlooking the beach and Kapati Island, this homely hostel (91 years old) promises high pressure, hot showers to ease your aches. YHA Paraparaumu is 200 metres from cafes and restaurants and near the coastal bike track and various beach walks. Ask the staff to book a ferry to Kapiti Island for a short break. Request one of the rooms with a sea view.

Celebrate completing the northern portion of Te Araroa at YHA Wellington, one of the most central hostels in the capital, ideal for everything Wellington has to offer. Te Papa and the waterfront are a five minute walk from the hostel, as is Courtenay Place, a hub of lively restaurants, cafes and bars.
Stock up on all essentials as you prepare for your next half of the journey. There is large grocery store across the street and number of outdoor shops in the city. The 5 star Qualmark hostel has an espresso bar on site, selling barista made coffee, a selection of cabinet food and a $6 bagel breakfast.

YHA Picton The Villa is a converted 110-year old boutique character home with sun-drenched rooms, gardens and verandas. Located in the centre of town, everything Picton has to offer is right on the doorstep including kayaking, diving, sailing, walks or cruising the magnificent Marlborough Sounds.
Family owned and operated, YHA Picton is clean, tidy and friendly with a wide range of comfortable accommodation at affordable prices. Accommodation includes multi-share, female only, double and twin ensuite. YHA Picton also accommodates families and groups. The hostel has two fully equipped kitchens plus a BBQ kitchen and offers free unlimited WiFi, free bike hire, fishing gear, spa pool, treehouse and a courtyard fire for evenings listening to live music and meeting fellow travellers.
YHA Anakiwa is a walker’s gem with excellent facilities just 70m from the shore and the lower end of Queen Charlotte Track. Relax and unwind from Te Araroa with a glass of wine on the deck, take a soak in the large modern spa, watch one of 300 DVDs in the movie lounge, or take out the free kayaks to spot seals in the harbour. The nearest supermarket is in Havelock, a 22 minute drive away, so enjoy the hostel’s multiple meal options that include pizza (for a fee). Got your own groceries? Enjoy the self-catering kitchen and BBQ area. YHA Anakiwa is quite secluded, so mobile phone coverage is not guaranteed though WiFi is available.

YHA Nelson is a convenient base to take a break from Te Araroa. There's plenty of space to stash your gear and there's a sauna, foosball, table tennis and a DVD collection to help you unwind from your tramp. YHA Nelson is in the heart of sunny Nelson and close to iconic cafes and restaurants. Heaps of outdoor gear shops are within walking distance as well as a supermarket that's open till late.

YHA Hamner Springs

YHA Hanmer Springs is the perfect place to divert from the trail and soak up the mountain atmosphere and soak in natural hot springs. The hostel is a 3 minute walk from Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools and Spa for relaxing tired muscles before hitting the trail again. The hostel offers a range of accommodation options from private ensuite to multi-share. Use the drying room for your gear, relax in the courtyard with a BBQ or spend cold nights in front of the log fire.
YHA Arthur's Pass
Mountain House YHA Arthur's Pass is situated in the alpine village of Arthur's Pass, right on the Main Divide of the Southern Alps, just two hours from Christchurch and ninety minutes from Greymouth on the West Coast. YHA Arthur’s Pass backpacker accommodation consists of the main backpacker lodge set in the centre of town, a modern, heated suntrap with great views and visiting kea, but still with a small hostel feel.
Just opposite the Lodge is the historic YHA building with multi-share rooms perfect for backpacking groups. A mural by Cora Wilding, the founder of the YHA New Zealand, is a feature of this building. Adjacent to our historic lodge are two fully self contained motel units. They are spacious modern and well appointed with televisions, queen sized beds and electric blankets.
As groceries are expensive and limited in Arthur's Pass Village, we advise you to purchase groceries before you arrive. You can do this in Hokitika or Greymouth on the West Coast or in Christchurch on the East Coast. If not resupplying from a larger town, we are happy to take bounce/resupply boxes. We charge $10 if you are staying or $20 if not per box or parcel. Pop your name, phone number and estimated arrival date on the box.
