Long-distance tramping in New Zealand is immensely rewarding. But it comes with some unique challenges that you’ll need to prepare for.

New Zealand’s landscape is rugged and steep. It is often covered in dense bush or exposed to wild weather patterns. The weather is fickle and can change very quickly. Don’t be surprised if you’re caught in a storm in the middle of summer, especially at altitude. Rivers rise and fall with each storm and it is common to find them impassable for prolonged periods.

All this shouldn’t put you off. Quite the opposite. The wild nature of New Zealand’s outdoors is what makes this environment so special. The wild storms can be highlights of the trip if you are ready for them! Preparing well will mean you enjoy the trail and make it home to tell the story.
