A Taonga for the Trail

A Taonga for the Trail

Every Te Araroa walker carries a story — one of courage, curiosity, and connection. To honour that journey, Te Araroa Trust gifts each walker a unique taonga: a piece of pāua shell, worn on the wrist, rustic and authentic — just like the trail itself.

These unique pieces of Pāua shell have been blessed by Kai Tahu Kaumātua Teoti Jardine of the Õraka-Aparima Rūnaka. You can watch a video of the blessing here. As Teoti says,

“these beautiful pieces of Pāua, that have been created by the craftspeople of Aotearoa, are tiaki, they are guardians for you on your journey of Te Araroa. So you take care of them and they will take good care of you”.

Sourced from the wild southern coastlines of Aotearoa by Ocean Shell Studios in Aparima, Riverton, each pāua piece reflects a deep respect for nature and craftsmanship. Ocean Shell Studios is committed to sustainability, ensuring that every shell is harvested with care and transformed with intention.

Pāua is more than a beautiful shell. It represents strengthharmony, and spiritual protection — qualities that resonate deeply with the experience of Te Araroa. It also honours the incredible decision each walker has made: to traverse the length of Aotearoa, step by step.

This taonga carries aroha (love) and is a symbol of connection: to the Te Araroa community, to the whenua (land), and to the spirit of the trail. It’s a reminder of the honest, rough-around-the-edges beauty of the journey, and of the resilience it calls forth.

As you walk, may this paua taonga encourage you, protect you, and remind you that you are part of something bigger – a living story that stretches the length of Aotearoa.
