Te Araroa Trust Joins 1% for the Planet – Another Step Towards a Thriving Trail

by | Oct 20, 2025

We’re excited to share that Te Araroa Trust is now part of the 1% for the Planet Environmental Partners network – a global movement of businesses and environmental organisations working together to support people and the planet. Businesses commit to donating 1% of their annual sales to environmental causes, and so far, the network has achieved over $823 million USD in environmental giving.

Joining this network helps us connect with donors who share our vision for a thriving trail – one that not only connects walkers to nature but actively protects and enhances it for future generations.

Whakahou: Our Guiding Philosophy

At Te Araroa Trust, our work is shaped by Whakahou – a long-term commitment to renewal, restoration, and regeneration of the trail. It’s not a single project, but a guiding philosophy that guides everything we do, from infrastructure decisions to community engagement.

Whakahou aligns deeply with the mission of 1% for the Planet, offering businesses a meaningful way to contribute to environmental and cultural regeneration in Aotearoa.

We’re not just caring for the trail, we’re regenerating it for the benefit of te taiao (the environment), hapori (communities), and future generations. Every step taken on Te Araroa contributes to this vision as we:

  • Restore native habitats and biodiversity along the trail corridor
  • Partner with mana whenua to honour the whakapapa and stories of each place
  • Support local communities by connecting them to the trail and its walkers
  • Improve the trail route to reduce road walking and enhance natural experiences
  • Educate walkers in Leave No Trace practices and inspire care for our precious natural resources

We’re proud to be part of a global movement that shares our values and helps us grow our impact.
