Puhoi Lookout Track

Rodney Mayor Penny Webster opened a new Te Araroa link Sunday Feb. 24. The new track is a kilometre-long Lookout Loop, that rises a spectacular 100 metres above the historic Puhoi village, but it's also regarded as the first step connecting Te Araroa's route north from Puhoi to Remiger Road (see map). From Remiger Road, Te Araroa's route is already finalised across Dunn's Bush and over Moirs Hill reaching the Dome walkway, and going through to Govan Wilson Road, 33 kilometres distant.

Te Araroa' s northern project manager, Fiona Mackenzie, said local farmer Arthur Dunn and the Puhoi Landcare Group had worked hard to get the new Puhoi Lookout Track in place.

"It's a good start," she said. "When we've negotiated our route through to Remiger Road, and when we've solved access issues further north on the flanks of Tamahunga, we'll have a 50-kilometre route crossing three peaks, Moirs Hill, the Dome, and Tamahunga, and connecting Puhoi to Pakiri."
