Te Araroa Trust saddened to learn of death on Paekakariki Escarpment Track

Te Araroa Trust are extremely saddened to hear of the death of a walker today on Te Araroa’s newly opened Paekakariki Escarpment Track on Wellington’s Kapiti Coast.

The 10km track was opened less than a month ago (April 9th) and is part of the 3000km Te Araroa Trail, which runs from Cape Reinga to Bluff.

“It is such a tragedy for this to occur and our thoughts go out to the family and friends of the deceased person.

"We were pleased to have provided a briefing and maps to local emergency services before the Track opened to ensure they were best-placed for any response situations. I’d like to recognise their efforts today, and also recognise other walkers on the track who were also quick to help."

While investigations are continuing, Te Araroa understands the death is being reported as a medical event.

Mr Wakelin says the track has been thoroughly assessed for safety and meets all requirements and communication regarding it’s challenges has been intentionally frank. “It is a steep climb, going from sea level up to 220 metres with about 500 linear metres of steps (approx. 1500 steps). It is narrow and exposed so we always recommend a good level of fitness and sturdy footwear.”
